Herniated Disc Q & A

What is a herniated disc?

A herniated disc, which is also called a slipped or ruptured disc, occurs when the inner portion of a vertebral disc breaks through the exterior and pushes out into the spinal canal.

You can develop a herniated disc after an injury or from excessive strain. However, most herniations are due to disc degeneration, which occurs as you get older.

Herniated discs can develop in any part of your spine, but most often occur in the lumbar and cervical spine.

What are herniated disc symptoms?

Herniated disc symptoms vary in both type and severity and depend on the position and size of the herniation. If your herniated disc isn’t pressing on a nerve, you may only experience a dull backache.

However, if the herniation is pressing on a nerve, you may experience pain, numbness, or weakness in the area of the body that the compressed nerve travels to.

In most cases, the discomfort caused by a herniated disc resolves within a few days or weeks. However, for some, nerve pain can become chronic.

The neurosurgical team at California Neurosurgical Institute recommends you schedule an evaluation if you’ve been experiencing discomfort from your herniated disc for six or more months.

What are the surgical procedures for a herniated disc?

The experienced neurosurgical team performs minimally invasive spine surgeries to treat herniated discs. Some of the surgical procedures offered include:

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion
During an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, the cervical disc is removed and replaced with a fusion of the bones above and below. With minimally invasive techniques, the team at California Neurosurgical Institute performs this as an outpatient procedure that often results in very little downtime.

Artificial disc replacement
With an artificial disc replacement, your neurosurgeon replaces your herniated disc with a prosthesis. Research conducted by the neurosurgeons at California Neurosurgical Institute demonstrates that this technique has the advantage of reduced complications, including fewer future spine operations.

Corpectomy
For more extensive spinal compression problems, your neurosurgeon may perform a corpectomy, which uses a newer expandable device that replaces the disc and bone.

Spinal decompression (laminotomy or laminectomy)
During a spinal decompression surgery, a portion of the spine bone is removed to relieve pressure on the nerves and spinal canal.

Posterior fusion
The posterior fusion refers to a surgical approach from the back of the spine and includes fusing bone and/or metal to two or more spinal bones.

The type of surgery you need depends on the location and severity of your herniated disc.
